Haus Family Christmas Party A Rousing Success

After a Christmas carol sing-a-long and professional clowns, Saint Nicholas rewarded the truly excellent children of Deutsches Haus with an extended visit and toys for everyone. Never have we seen so many smiles and flashing Rudolph noses. Not one child received a lump of coal in his shoe! And our handsome and gentle St. Nicholas (said by some to resemble member Karl Stiers) radiated warmth, patience and good cheer in the finest spirit of the season. Ray Garrity briefly described to enraptured children and their parents the origins of, similarities and differences between Santa Claus & St. Nicholas.

The Haus was beautifully decorated by our talented members, Julie Bourgeois, Phyllis Lesage & Anne Farmer, with a series of Nutcracker Princes and Princesses who shone against the warm background of red tablecloths and a glowing traditional Christmas tree donated by Adrian Jüttner and decorated under Julie’s guidance. The Nutcracker centerpieces crafted by Anne and Julie were raffled off after the party to grace members’ holiday tables.

Thanks to Chef Mike Poissonot, the food was not only delicious but wonderful to look at. The Lesages, Joan Hughes and Joy Seeger saw to it that a wide variety of tempting entrees and desserts were available to appeal to most children and grownups. The atmosphere of cooperation and fun that emanated from workers and partygoers was a direct result of the imagination and creativity of Phyllis and George Lesage. Not only did Phyllis create the apparel for St. Nicholas and begin a return to a more traditional German Christmas, she and George did most of the planning and shopping with help from Joan Hughes and Trudy Burkhart, printed and mailed all invitations, dealt with personalities, logistics & finances and functioned as a combination of Dr. Phil & Oprah in dealing with the inevitable problems. Our thanks to all who helped out, including the Saturday Work Party, and bravo, George, Phyllis, Karl, Ray and Chef Mike!

A Special Celebration for Oktoberfest Volunteers

With the help of George and Phyllis Lesage, the Haus is throwing a party on Jan 15th at 5 PM for our wonderful Oktoberfest volunteers.  If you worked at Oktoberfest but you have not received an invitation, please notify George at spectaker@aol.com or 271-3232. Admission is by invitation only.

Tirolnacht

Deutsches Haus welcomes University of Innsbruck students to New Orleans at our annual celebration of Tirolnacht on Friday, February 11th at 6:00 PM. There is no charge at the door. The Haus will open at the usual time of 4:00 PM. Delicious New Orleans style food, including fried turkey and red beans and rice, will be available, along with our broad selection of domestic and imported beers, to encourage our guests to feel right at home. Shannon Davis will again perform traditional New Orleans style jazz favorites on the piano, always a big hit with both students and our members and fostering boisterous “second lines” snaking through the Bierstube. Dr. Charles Hadley is Chairman of this event and suggestions and questions relating to the celebration can be E-mailed to him at chadley@uno.edu or conveyed to him through the Haus Steward. Please join us for a gemütlich evening.

Notice from Damenchor & Sängerchor

The monthly meetings will be added to the scheduled rehearsals on Friday, February 18th and our regular rehearsal and meeting schedule will be resumed on the first Friday in March.
