Tom Shinn elected President

Lt. Col. Thomas G. Shinn, USMC, was elected president of the Deutsches Haus for the year 2001 at the January 23 meeting. He succeeds three-term President Hubert Vahrenhorst, who retires after many years on the Board of Directors. Shinn thanked everyone for his or her assistance in the past Haus events, and he said that we will be seeking ways to improve Oktoberfest, adding "Oktoberfest is what keeps our organization going"

Brian Winters was elected 1st vice president, Keith Oldendorf 2nd vice president, Herbert Hille secretary, and Alden Hagardorn, treasurer. Newly elected to the Board were James Copeland, Jeff Graf, and Joseph Stepaany, Jr. Other directors: Janice Daughdrill, Dr. Charles D. Hadley, Han-Gerg Heinemann, Margaret Ingram, Richard Kuntz, Claus Sadlier, and Anna Whitely.

Introducing a new system for issuing ballots, Dr. Ray Garrity, and his Election Committee proved a smooth, relatively quick election in this well-attended meeting.

Tirolnacht February 2

Thirty-five students from the Universität Innsbruck in Austria comes to the Deutsches Haus on Friday, February 2, for our annual Tirolnacht. They will have arrived in the Crescent city the previous day to begin one month of study at the University of New Orleans.

Our guests will be serving a dinner of deep-fried turkey and red beans and rice at about 6:30 p.m., after the food line will open for others. Jazz-blues-gospel singer-pianist Shannon Davis will introduce our Austrian visitors to some of our New Orleans music.

Dr. Charles Hadley, Professor at UNO and program coordinator have been invited, and the public is welcome.

We're going to try something new a last-Saturday social.
At its January meeting the Board of Director decided to consider something new: a fourth or fifth Saturday social. We want your input on this. Is it a good idea or a bad one? Please let us know what you think. The first would be a speckled-trout dinner on Saturday, March 31.
