Thanks
from the Haus to Retiring Board Members
The present Board and
the membership of the Haus want to extend their sincere gratitude to retiring
Board members, who have worked so diligently and tirelessly to put the Haus on
a financially sound footing, to enlarge our membership, to entertain us, and to
see to the difficult tasks that improve and maintain a very old but beloved
structure so that it will be here for our children and our children’s children.
Thank you Richard Kuntz, Haus historian and legal advisor, Tom Shinn, Haus
& Oktoberfest Chair 2004, and Bill Gunn, Treasurer, all three former
Presidents of the Haus, and Michon Shinn, long-time Board member, and Stewart
Eastman, Haus photographer & 2004 Entertainment Chair, for your imagination
and persistence and unbelievably hard work and dedication. And good luck to
your successors who have your high standards to meet.
German Heritage Festival Association Officers & Abita Brewery Outing
The election of Board members and officers took
place at the January meeting: Keith Oldendorf, President; Jürgen F. Seifert,
Vice-President; Ernest B. Beyer, Recording Secretary; Joyce S. Stall,
Corresponding Secretary; James Copeland, Treasurer; and Board Members: Frank L.
Beier, Jr.; Lila M. Beyer; Louise D. Lyons; Joy Seeger; Alden G. Hagardorn;
Karl Stiers; Gail W. Perry; Herb F. Hille, Jr.; Joan A. Hughes; and Barbara
Winfield. The major thrust of the organization is the staging of the
Oktoberfest Parade, which has grown steadily in participation, popularity,
quality and size over the last 5-years and has become increasingly costly, as
well. Each year is an increasing
challenge for the Membership.
The calendar for the year was also presented and approved
and will be reported in Monatsblatt over the coming year and by E-mail, as the
dates approach. There are a number of really interesting and fun-filled events,
such as the always wonderful Goulash dinner, Christmas in July, and the Wine
& Cheese & Silent Auction, which expand in scope and diversity each
year. Member or not, you are always welcome to attend and membership is open to
all.
The special GHFA outing this month is an exciting trip to
and tour of the Abita Brewery in Abita Springs on Sunday, February 20th,
at 1:00 PM, which includes a tour of the Brewery (with sampling of the product,
of course) and a lovely luncheon at the Abita Brew Club. The cost is $25.00 per
person. It’s a good way to greet the budding Southern spring. Reservations and
payment must be made in advance. The deadline is Feb 18th, but you
will want to make your plans before that time to be assured of a spot. Joan Hughes at 504-866-4025 will be happy to
provide additional information and directions to the Brewery. As soon as a map
is available, it will also be sent to you via E-mail.
German Film Festival Resumes
in March
Patience one and all. The complete list of the free, open
to the public, 2005 Spring and Summer English-subtitled German films will be
available in the March issue of Monatsblatt and by E-mail. We promise you a
film-going experience that will exceed even the exciting and innovative films
shown last Summer and Fall, including some classics and some contemporary
films. Many will be on Thursdays but there will also be a number of Friday
night date specials. Simple inexpensive refreshments will again be served and
free coffee and dessert will be served after the movies.
Fasching!
Mardi Gras is
early this year and we are happy to report that the Haus –and the Bar- will
once again be open for Fasching on February 5th at
Eat, drink and be merry and have free use of the facilities while you enjoy Endymion and the Canal St. Parades! Members & 1 Guest, & Children under 13 free, Non-Members $4.00 each. This is the perfect way to experience Mardi Gras, with all the conveniences at your disposal and great companionship. Not to mention the best selection of German and domestic beer in town!
In 1992 the journal "Nature" reported that five thousand year old pottery discovered in Iranian caves contained evidence of having been filled with beer. Brewing is one of the oldest human professions, emerging shortly after humans began cultivating crops, and was used as a means to make use of, and to
preserve, excess grains.
References to beer exist in the written records of most ancient
civilizations in both
liters of beer are produced around the world
each year. Until recent times most brewers were women.
