Presidents of Deutsches Haus Past and Present Celebrate Our 75th Anniversary

Back Row (left to right) Dr. Raymond J. Garrity, Dr. Charles Hadley, William Gunn II, Lt. Col. Thomas G. Shinn, USML (ret), Hubert Vahrenhorst, Col. Richard A. Kuntz, AUS (ret). Front Row (left to right) Richard McKlinski, Gerhard Sigle, Helmut P. Ermlich, B. King Sherrer.

Congratulations to 2004 Officers & Board Members

On January 27th, the annual Deutsches Haus election of Board Members and Officers was held at the Haus. The new Board consists of Stewart K. Eastman, William "Bill" Gunn, Hans-Georg Heinemann, Margaret Ingram, Heinrich C. W. Kloth, Col. Richard A. Kuntz, AUS (Ret.), Jules Anton Lauritzen, George L. Lesage, Phyllis D. Lesage, Keith N. Oldendorf, Charles Rome, Michon B. Shinn, Thomas G. Shinn, USMC (Ret), James J. Tregler, and Anna Whitely.

New Officers are Keith N. Oldendorf, President, Jules Anton Lauritzen, First Vice-President, Heinrich C. W. Kloth, Second Vice President, Richard A. Kuntz, Secretary, and William “Bill” Gunn, Treasurer.

Our thanks to Ray Garrity who skillfully handled the intricacies of the nomination and voting process with his usual professionalism and aplomb.

Our retiring President, Tom Shinn, reported that the Haus treasury is in an exceptionally good position with over $100,000 in assets to meet all budgeted and any unbudgeted expenditures for the coming year. Despite several rainy weekends, which lowered overall attendance, Oktoberfest 2003 was actually the most profitable on record. “As outgoing president, I appreciate the dedicated participation of the membership, which made my tenure enjoyable and successful.” We owe Tom our gratitude for his hard work, financial wizardry, and improvements to the Haus and look forward to his continued input as a Board Member.

Annual Fish Fry Scheduled for Saturday, March 27th

We are fortunate that Phyllis and George Lesage are inveterate fishermen. Each year, the Haus reaps the benefits at the Haus Fish Fry, scheduled this year on Saturday, March 27th. The Haus will open at 5 p.m. and food will be served at 6 p.m. The speckled trout are always crisp on the outside and moist and succulent inside.  Not only do the Lesages catch the trout but they also see to it that they are cooked to perfection. Served with corn on the cob, cole slaw, seasoned boiled potatoes, and French bread, this is a fish banquet always anticipated eagerly by our members. Admission is $10.00 per dinner and available by reservation only, with a deadline of closing time March 19th.  Don’t miss this always delicious and enjoyable occasion!

Haus Planning an Overnight Bus Trip to Jackson, MS for

“The Glory of Baroque Dresden” Exhibit

The membership of all German cultural and special interest organizations are invited to join with Deutsches Haus members late in June or early in July on an overnight trip to the much anticipated “The Glory of Dresden” Exhibit scheduled to open soon at the Mississippi Arts Pavilion in Jackson, MS. The exhibit is sponsored by The Mississippi Commission for International Cultural Exchange, Inc. in association with Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden. Heinz Kloth is making arrangements to charter one or more air-conditioned buses and to reserve comfortable and reasonable hotel accommodations in Jackson. Arrangements for tickets have already been made and at least two meals will be included. If you have any questions or suggestions, please contact Heinz at @ 455-6413. You will be kept informed of progress and prices through E-mail and succeeding issues of Monatsblatt.

Vom Historiker des Hauses

The annual general membership meeting for the election of officers and members of the Board of Directors was held Tuesday, January 26th, 1934 at 8:00 p.m. at the Deutsches Haus.

The newly elected officers included Victor Huber, President, Bruno Prager, 1st Vice-President, Charles Schindler, 2nd Vice-President, Fritz Baldenhofer, Treasurer, and Ernst Miller, Secretary.

Also selected for one-year terms as Directors were Ernst Blattmann, Thomas P. Fischer, Bernard Gerhardt, Milton F. Langbehn, Hugo Muller, Herman Prager, Julius Prager, Ewald Rumpf, Edmund Schwartz and Carl Sutter.

An event filled year began with a presentation by former President Adam A. Muhleisen of the annual trophy award for excellence in German to Alcee Fortier High School. Closer to home, in April the doorway was widened between the Dining Room and the Inside Bar. In May, Miss Norma Middleton made the first offer to sell her property at 2122 Cleveland Avenue to the Haus. After several counter offers, the property was finally purchased on 20th August 1936.

Quarterly Membership Meeting Friday, March 26th at 8 p.m.

The first Deutsches Haus Quarterly Membership Meeting under the aegis of the newly elected Officers and Board of Directors of the Haus will take place on Friday, March 26th at 8:00 p.m. Reports will be presented from all committee chairpersons and future directions will be discussed. A light snack will be served after the meeting and arrangements are being made to have music after the meeting.

It’s Easter Egg Hunt Time at the Haus-A Family Occasion

Margaret Ingram, shown here with her buddy, the Deutsches Haus Easter Bunny, is helping to plan a bang-up Easter Egg Hunt for the children, with more than a dozen dozen decorated eggs, loads of treats, games for the older children and prizes for everyone! Each child age 2 years or older will receive an Easter basket from the Easter Bunny and children under 2 will receive an appropriate toy. There will be plenty of homemade foods and desserts, delicious and tempting for both adults and children and featuring healthy dishes for those with special dietary needs.

The cost is $6.00 each for both adults and children and admission is available by advance reservation only. The deadline for reservations is March 22nd. For more information call Margaret at 486-6841 or Phyllis Lesage at 271-3232.

Checks made out to Deutsches Haus can be mailed to the Haus c/o Easter Egg Hunt or left with the Haus Steward, along with the name, sex, and age of each child. This is very important because it enables us to insure that each child has a happy experience. You don’t have to have a grandchild or a child to attend. Many of us come just to watch the children enjoy themselves and to watch them develop over the years. Don’t miss the fun!

Notes from the Auxiliary

Thanks to Rocky Troxler, the Auxiliary enjoyed 2 months of participation in Sing-a-Longs that were a joy to hear and join. The first included both popular tunes and traditional folk songs and the second ran the gamut of traditional Christmas Carols, which really set the tone of the season. We thank Rocky for being so generously sharing of his time and talent.
In January, the Auxiliary threw a winter celebration honoring the Officers and Board of Directors of Deutsches Haus, as well as members of Damenchor and Sängerchor, an annual occurrence that pays tribute to those who play an active part in the life of the Haus. The party also served as a fond adieu to member Mary Vernoy who has moved to Nevada and whose presence is already sorely missed, although she has promised to return for Oktoberfest 2004.
We particularly want to commend Margaret Ingram for her efforts above and beyond her usual tireless work with the Auxiliary. This year she alone baked a total of approximately 70 decorated cakes for the Auxiliary Bake Sales at Oktoberfest 2003, a particularly successful venture this year.
The March meeting of the Auxiliary will be held on April 2, 2004, instead of at its scheduled time, because of the conflict with the Quarterly Membership Meeting.
All members and guests of Deutsches Haus are invited to attend an Irish Caelli on Friday April 30, 2004 at 7:30 p.m. for an evening of Irish singing and dancing, as well as Irish jokes and lore. Please join us for another session of audience participation guaranteed to amuse and relax the participants.
Please consider becoming a member of the Auxiliary and help to strengthen our ability to achieve our purpose, the support of the Haus in every way we can, materially and through hard work. An invitation to join and a membership application can be found on the table near the bar at the Haus or can be obtained from Brigitte Gunn via E-mail wgunn2@bellsouth.net  or Barbara Fineberg medwriter@bellsouth.net or 504-812-2917.

Travel to Northern Germany with Margot Mitchell

Margot Mitchell is leading a small group of Deutsches Haus members and friends on a journey to Northern Germany. There are spaces for only a few more participants. If you are interested, please attend the meeting or contact Margo by phone @ 861-9966 or 861-0031 or by E-mail Bapm39@aol.com

Monatsblatt Supplement Containing Stewart Eastman’s Photos Will be Issued Later This Month

Because of infection with the MyDoom virus and another whose name I have not yet discovered, my computer has done some very odd things to the graphics pages I set up over the 2 months of attempting to put out this issue, which should have been a minimum of 2 issues.
We are so fortunate to have Stewart to record our activities and he does it so well, that to completely skip publishing these photos would be foolish indeed. When I have finished re-downloading all materials from the original disks wherever possible and assuring that I cannot infect my new computer, I will publish the supplement towards the end of the month. Thank you for your patience. It has not been a good experience to deal with this, but I have learned a great deal from the experience.

Recipe from Ursula Jackson for The 75th Anniversary

Deutsches Haus Cookbook

I am including this recipe to inspire our membership to share their family recipes with Deutsches Haus. This is one of several favorite recipes Ursula has given us to be put into The 75th Anniversary Deutsches Haus Cookbook.

Lentil Soup

Recipe by Ursula Jackson, Deutsches Haus
2 cups lentils
1 pound smoked sausage, diced in small pieces
1-cup chopped onions
½ cup chopped celery
½ cup bell peppers
1-TBSP salt
½ TBSP black pepper
½ TBSP garlic, minced or pulverized
½ tsp cumin
5-quarts water
2 to 3 chopped potatoes

Maggi gravy seasoning

Bring all ingredients to a boil, then lower heat and cook until the lentils are thick and creamy, about 1 hour.

Add a little Maggi gravy seasoning to taste when finished.

Joe Kueck’s Irish Journey with His Family

After several years of dealing with illness and grief, Joe and his wife took his Mom back to Ireland, the land of some of her ancestors and had a wonderful and carefree time on the Old Sod. I couldn’t fit in the picture of the family at Guinness Ale and with students in the Pub. What a lovely gesture it was to give his Mom this trip she had dreamed of taking.
