2002 Volksfest a Breezy,

Eva Sadlier On April 5, members of the Damenchor voted to retain the 2001 Vorstand in 2002. The Vorstand is as follows: Präsident Dr. Florence Jones, Vizepräsident Eve Sadlier, Protokollsekretär Juanita Landau, and Schatzmeister Ursula Jackson. We thank the members for their vote of confidence.

On Saturday, June 22, the Deutsches Haus will host a Crab Boil for members and their guests. Doors will open at 5 p.m., and food will be served beginning at 6 p.m. Music by Shannon Davis. Prices are $10 for dozen #1 crabs, $5 for bucket of corn and potatoes. RSVP with the Haus steward no later than June 20th. For additional information see the Steward or George Lesage or Joe Stephany

| Fourth Friday Social
On Friday, July 26th at 8 p.m., the Deutsches Haus will hold a fourth Friday social. Ira Milan’s band will play, and food will be served. |

Vom Historiker des Hauses Capitalizing on the success generated by the Volksfest the previous year, the Haus Board appointed A. Muhleisen, chairman for the Volksfest Committee for May, 1931 and also invited the Ladies Auxiliary and the Germania Juniors to participate and provide assistance. With the appearance of the B.K.S. Military Band, the second annual Volksfest showed a handsome profit of $1,043.22. With the arrival of 10 July 1931 the mortgage note of $11,325.00 falling due to the Southern Bell Telephone Co., a payment of $1,350.00 was accepted by vice-president Stair of Bell to be applied against interest on this note with an extension of one year to play out the principal balance. Also at this time an annual payment of $583.88 to the City of New Orleans by the Haus for its share of paving of South Galvez Street was made. Recognition was received by the Haus for its donation of a bed to the Tubercular Hospital. Also, Joseph Reuther announced the presentation of a trophy to the outstanding scholar in connection with the graduation of Professor J. Corniff's German class. For his many years of service as the director of singing, Professor J. Engel was lauded by being carried with full membership by the Deutsches Haus. By year's end the Haus was able to post financial assets with the original Haus purchases and its improvements at $28,384.22, the Heideberger Halle expansion at $11,177.31 plus the installation of the bowling alleys at $9,774.67 and to be added to the above the Turnverein building was donated at $5,212.99 resulting in an impressive total of $53,965.31 against a dept of $10,000.00 due Southern Bell for original purchase of the Deutsches Haus and a loan of $3,000.00 by former president Sigmund Odenheimber in partial payment for installation of the Bowling alleys. THE STORY? April Robinson This month we continue our column, which takes a closer look at some of the more interesting artifacts that the Haus has acquired through the years. This sturdy piece of rope hangs high on a plaque in the entryway across from the Ladies’ room and above the office. Anyone with more information on the rope and the ship it once launched can contact the Monatsblatt staff by e-mail at deutscheshaus@cox.net or by dropping us a message at the Haus in care of the Monatsblatt. Please tell us what you know and we’ll publish the rope’s story in a future edition. |

| Letter to the Monatsblatt reader / Deutsches Haus Members. As the editor, I would like to thank the members of the Deutsches Haus that have contributed to the Monatsblatt. Without them we would not have much to publish. After taking over the editing duties last August, I found that publishing the Monatsblatt is a larger job than I anticipated. I would like to personally thank the volunteers who are always there with an article, pictures, or to help edit. I especially would like to extend my thanks to Lisa Hollis, April Robinson, Stewart Eastman, and Margo Mitchell. They all have full-time jobs and contribute greatly during their limited spare time. Without them, we would not have a Monatsblatt. I would like to ask you, the members of the Deutsches Haus, to help the Monatsblatt staff in making our newsletter better. We desperately need ideas, articles, and stories for our upcoming issues. Information about your various organizations, travels, and upcoming events would be wonderful additions to the Monatsblatt. If you feel you need help with your contributions, contact a Monatsblatt staff member and we will be happy to assist you either in writing or editing what you have written. Photos, old and new would also be welcome. Another way to help with the Monatsblatt would be to place ads within the publication. Ads help the Deutsches Haus pay for the Monatsblatt every month. | Beer Trivia Provided by Jim Copeland It was the accepted practice in Babylonia 4,000 years ago that for a month after the wedding, the bride's father would supply his son-in-law with all the mead he could drink. Mead is a honey beer, and because the Babylonian calendar was lunar based, this period was called the "honey month" - or what we know today as the "honeymoon." Before thermometers were invented, brewers would dip a thumb or finger into the mix to find the right temperature for adding yeast. Too cold, and the yeast wouldn't grow. Too hot, and the yeast would die. This thumb in the beer is where we get the phrase "rule of thumb." In English pubs, ale is ordered by pints and quarts. So in old England, when customers got unruly, the bartender would yell at them to mind their own pints and quarts and settle down. It's where we get the phrase "mind your P's and Q's." In 1740 Admiral Vernon of the British fleet decided to water down the navy's rum. Needless to say, the sailors weren't too pleased and called Admiral Vernon, Old Grog, after the stiff wool grogram coats he wore. The term "grog" soon began to mean the watered down drink itself. When you were drunk on this grog, you were "groggy," a word still in use today. Many years ago in England, pub frequenters had a whistle baked into the rim or handle of their ceramic cups. When they needed a refill, they used the whistle to get some service. "Wet your whistle," is the phrase inspired by this practice.

| Another segment in our occasional series on the groups that meet at the Haus NOLHAM NEW ORLEANS LIVING HISTORY OF THE AMERICAN MILITARY TROUPE, Inc. PURPOUS The purpose of this organization is to honor veterans and educate the public through battle reenactments, living history encampments, militaria displays, parades, or other related events. MEMBERSHIP Membership is open to individuals 14 years or older., However, minors must have written permission of their legal guardian and be sponsored by a regular or honorary member. Members must have an interest in honoring veterans by participating in activities sanctioned by the Board; must not have been dishonorably discharged from the armed forces; must not be a convicted felon; and must not be addicted to or unlawfully use drugs or alcohol. REGULAR MEMBER - Regular members must be at least 21 years of age and pay annual dues. STUDENT MEMBER - Student members range from 15 to 20 years of age and pay discounted dues. ASSOCIATED MEMBERS - Associated members are non-dues paying members who have participated in at least 3 NOLHAM sanctioned activities in the past 12 months. They cannot vote or hold offices. PROSPECTIVE MEMBERS - Prospective members have declared their intentions of joining the Troupe by filling out a membership application. They have not paid dues or met the requirements of the Associate membership. Additional information may be obtained by contacting Obergrenadier@yahoo.com or info@wephaus.com. NOLHAM meets 7:00 p.m. every 2nd Thursday at the Deutsches Haus. |

Please note that the Monatsblatt staff is always eager to promote events but we do need your information in order to do so, particularly if a date is changed or rescheduled.
