Auxiliary Notes

The group Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann (literally, “the getting together of musicians of Ireland”), an Irish cultural organization with objectives similar to those of Deutsches Haus, namely nurturing and passing on the traditions and culture of their Irish homeland, will be the guest of the Auxiliary at 8:00 p.m. Friday, May 14th, after an early 7:00 p.m. Auxiliary business meeting.
Our Irish friends will present an evening of Irish music and dancing, with live musicians playing traditional instruments and a group of dancers trained to dance as their forbearers did simply for the joy of doing it and sharing it with others. They also sing the traditional, romantic, sometimes racy ballads and lays of their ancestral land. And they have agreed not only to entertain us but to instruct us on how to join in and do it right. It promises to be a lively and exuberant evening. You won’t want to miss it. All members and friends of Deutsches Haus are invited to participate. If you would like more information about Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, Noel Reid, their chairperson, has established a web page that describes the history and activities of the group. Go to www.irishneworleans.com.
The Auxiliary will be responsible for the cake booth at the Volksfest, Saturday June 12th from 6:00 p.m. until we are sold out. All donations of cakes for the sale will be gratefully accepted. We also need your help as a volunteer to sell cakes during the fest. For further information or to volunteer, please call Trudy Burkart at 943-1588.
The Auxiliary invites all women to attend its monthly meetings at 8 p.m. on the second Friday of the month. Please consider becoming a member of the Auxiliary and help us to support the Haus in every way we can, materially and through hard work. An application can be obtained from Brigitte Gunn via E-mail wgunn2@bellsouth.net or pick one up at the Haus.

Vom Historiker des Hauses

Our Past Presidents

In 1932, the Deutsches Haus and the country as a whole did not fare well financially. Matters further deteriorated in 1933, when a bank holiday was declared. Like the assets of other businesses, the funds deposited by the Haus were frozen. For several months, new sources of income had to be developed. As expected, the payment of membership dues fell off.

The Ladies Auxiliary and the Board of Directors concentrated all their efforts on promoting entertainment. The Auxiliary organized the “Mystic Krewe of Hearts,” a Carnival Society, and its success became one of the standard income sources of the season, in conjunction with Volksfest and the bimonthly Sunday Garden Parties. The Auxiliary alone contributed in excess of $500.00. Annual dues were reduced to $6.50 from $12.00 on January 1, 1934.

In December 1933, a marble Memorial Tablet was placed in the vestibule of the Haus to inscribe the names of benefactors in perpetual memory of their deeds. The first name was that of Mrs. Bruno Prager, whose husband, Bruno Prager, and their two sons and daughter donated $500.00 in loving memory of their wife and mother. This and all future donations from this source were dedicated exclusively to paying indebtedness and to the retirement of the existing mortgages.

A Busy Two Months for GHFA

After a sunny, convivial and very successful champagne brunch last month at Restaurant des Familles, which overlooks the beautiful and lush Bayou Familles, the German Heritage Festival Association’s next event is a Wine and Cheese Tasting and Silent Auction on Saturday, May 15th at 7:00 p.m. at the Haus. Offering a sampling of an assortment of international wines & tasty cheeses, and featuring a silent auction of many attractive and desirable items, don’t let this opportunity slip by without bidding on at least a few of these exceptional bargains. Admission is $15.00 per person.
At the GHFA membership meeting at the Haus on May 19th at 7:30 p.m., the D-Day Museum will present “The A Team” Program. Members of the team include combat veterans from WWII, Tom Blakey, paratrooper, D-Day, Jack Sullivan, rifleman, infantry, France, POW. Frank Tuttle, aviator and machine gunner, Pacific Theatre, and Ronald Abboud, Marine, Air Force, LA National Guard, Vietnam, relating “stories of the American men and women who prevailed in an epic struggle against tyranny.”
The next outing will be at Bavarian Chalet, 2142 First Street in Slidell, 985-645-0400, on Sunday, June 13th 2004 at 11:30 a.m. There are 3 entrees offered, which are temptations to the tastebuds of all of us who love traditional German cooking. 1. Jaeger Schnitzel (pork) with a mushroom brandy sauce, bread dumpling and red cabbage; 2. Wiener Schnitzel (veal) with German potato salad and red cabbage, and 3. Chicken Jaeger Art, breaded breast of chicken with a mushroom brandy sauce and Spaetzle and Sauerkraut. A house salad and ice tea or soft drinks are included. For dessert there is a choice of Apple Strudel or Black Forest Cake, served with coffee. The price is $28.00 per person, including tax and gratuity.

Our Thoughts Are with Norris and Maria Babin

Norris Babin, friend and a long-time member of the Haus, has been discharged from the hospital after a recent stroke. Our prayers and best wishes are with him and Maria as he does the hard work necessary to restore his health.

Travel to Northern Germany with Margot Mitchell
Margo Mitchell is leading a small group of Deutsches Haus members and friends on an exciting journey to Northern Germany. The group will leave New Orleans on Tuesday, September 14, 2004 and return Friday, October 1, 2004. The next meeting of the travelers will be on Wednesday, May 12th at 7:00 p.m. at the Haus. There are spaces for only two more participants. If you are interested, please attend the meeting or contact Margo for information about the itinerary and costs by phone @ 861-9966 or 861-0031 or by E-mail Bapm39@aol.com. This is an excellent opportunity to join Margo and a compatible group of friends and fellow members in an exploration of our German heritage and to enjoy the benefits of Margo’s experience and knowledge of her native land.

Celebrating Volksfest 2004

Join members and friends of the Haus on Saturday June 12th for Volksfest 2004, an annual Deutsches Haus event dating back to 1931 and predating even our Oktoberfest celebration. Tom Shinn is chairman of the event. Straight from Jazz Fest, The Panorama Band led by Ben Schenk will provide the music, performing an eclectic repertory of European and Jazz music, including German special requests. At 5:30, Howard Pink, “Alphornist, and More” of the NO Philharmonic will present his light-hearted program on the history of the horn family of instruments, which you and your kids will love! The Sängerchor will perform between the band sets. And, of course, there will be plenty of good German cooking, beer, folk and ballroom dancing and a rousing good time to assuage Oktoberfest withdrawal. Doors open at 5:00 PM. Food will be served at 6:00 PM and the music starts at 5:30 PM and continues until 11:00 PM. Where else can you find authentic Bratwurst and Knackwurst, plus Kartoffelsalat (German potato salad), Pommes Frites (French fries), and Sauerkraut? And where else can you top this off with a selection of German beer and wine that improves each year? Tickets are $5.00 per person at the door. Members and children 12 and under are free. Military including DOD and DHS are discounted to $3.00. One guest of each member will be admitted free.

Recipe from The 75th Anniversary Deutsches Haus Cookbook
I am including another recipe from premiere Deutsches Haus chef, Ursula Jackson, in the hope that you will also share your family recipes with us. This is one of several favorite recipes Ursula donated to The 75th Anniversary Deutsches Haus Cookbook.
Rotkohl or Red Cabbage
Recipe by Ursula Jackson, Deutsches Haus

1 head red cabbage, 3 to 4 pounds
1 ½-cup white vinegar
1-cup sugar
3 bay leaves
1-cup chopped onion
1 tsp. cloves
¼ tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. black pepper
3-Tbsp. bacon grease or oil
2 apples or 1-jar applesauce (probably 12 to 16 ounce)

Heat grease in pot and add shredded red cabbage and all other ingredients, except apple or applesauce. Cook over a low flame until cabbage is tender. When using applesauce, add it when cabbage is almost cooked. Bring to a boil again. Taste and adjust amount of salt and pepper.
Because the cabbage is cooked over a low flame, it should not be necessary to add water.

Joe Kueck’s Genealogical Gift to His Family

From the left, “this is a photo of opah in 1916 in Admiral Wilheim's navy in WW1, #2 a photo of Grandpa's brother Klaus who died at a young age in New York City. I understand he was a workaholic, didn't take good care of himself and died of pneumonia at a young age. #3 Dad Klaus Kueck in 1942 #4 August Kueck, gros-gros opah, #5 gros opah Willie Kueck in 1931 and #6 grandpa’s sisters whose names are unknown”.

Using your scanner, your computer can save fragile photos that deteriorate over time. If you have photo suite software, you can make some repairs in damaged photos yourself (always saving a copy of the original, just in case) and there are photography shops specializing in photo restoration for those with damage that the amateur cannot handle. You now have the ability to preserve the irreplaceable, like the photos of the Kueck family above, and you can share family photographs with your children and relatives on CD, since many of these photos exist in single copies only. Label everything and identify everyone. You are providing your family with the priceless gift of their heritage.
There are some excellent Internet sites to assist with genealogical searches and to offer advice and resources. The Jefferson Genealogical Society, Inc., P.O. Box 961, Metairie, LA 70004-0961 offers useful information and state of the art books with practical advice for searching for your German roots. About.com also has an excellent genealogy site. If you want to preserve your own photos, you can find a scanning primer at http://graphicssoft.about.com/library/weekly/aa111799.htm. Let us know how you are coming along!
