Haus Barbeque Saturday Evening July 26th

Join us for our annual summer barbeque on Saturday evening July 26th featuring charbroiled hamburgers ($3.00) and assorted German sausages ($2.75) on buns, and shrimp kabobs ($3.00), grilled slowly in the pit over an open flame, with fries ($1.50), homemade coleslaw ($1.50), and delicious, definitely-not-low-cal, desserts ($1.50) made by the Ladies Auxiliary to tempt the palate.

Entertainment will be provided by Rocky and His Hot Fox-Trot Swing Band, and there will be plenty of good German beer, lots of dancing and, as always, much fun and conviviality.

Doors open at 5:00 PM. Food will be served at 6:00 PM and the music starts at 7:00 PM and continues until 11:00 PM. $5.00 per person at the door. Members and children under 12 are free.

Mark your calendar and join us for an evening of good food, good beer, good music, good fellowship

YA-501( c ) ( 3 ) ?????

The Deutsches Haus was incorporated as a Louisiana non-profit corporation on 7th November 1928 and its charter has not been amended since that date. To gain all the benefits of a charitable and benevolent entity under the Federal Law, it is mandatory that the Haus Charter be amended to conform to the stringent requirements of the revised Internal Revenue Code of 1986.

Once this is achieved, the Haus will enjoy significant benefits in that it will be exempt from the annual filing and paying of income taxes on the revenues it derives from all of the Oktoberfest and other festivals and fund raisers. Taxes saved can then be pumped into a myriad of projects and capital improvements.

Additionally, all donations to the Haus in the future will provide the donor with a deduction on his/her individual income tax return, thereby reducing the amount of taxes paid by the donor.

At the September Quarterly Meeting on Friday the 19th at 8:00 PM, several proposed amendments will be submitted to you, our members, for your approval. You are urged to attend and to participate in this historic event. Voting for these altered Charter provisions is an appropriate way to mark our 75-year history and will provide a substantial financial benefit to the Haus and all its members which will ensure many more years of solvency and vigor. Mark your calendar now and plan to attend.

75th Anniversary Deutsches Haus Cookbook

Our two master cooks, Brigitte Gunn and Ursula Jackson, have agreed to be coeditors of our 75th Anniversary Cookbook. Not only do they represent the cooking of different regions of Germany but they each have a somewhat different philosophy of cooking, which will add depth and interest to the recipes we will include.  We also want your favorite family recipes, traditional, updated and new, along with any anecdotal material about the source of the recipe(s) including family history, relationship to Deutsches Haus and the “Old Country,” and Louisiana/New Orleans, including the use of indigenous Louisiana foods and spices. All recipes will be credited to the contributors in the cookbook. If you want to share recipes and cooking techniques, such as grilling, roasting, etc. or help to test and critique recipes, please contact Brigitte at 504-394-3600 or Email her at wgunn2@bellsouth.net or call Ursula at 504-341-4809. We must get started immediately to put out an interesting and attractive product by the end of this year.

Stewart Eastman is our official photographer and taster. Colonel Richard Kuntz has agreed to provide us with historical information about the Haus and German influence on life in New Orleans. We have also been considering making the cookbook available on CD-ROM. This is a huge undertaking and we need all the help we can get. I guarantee that you will learn a lot about German cooking of all kinds when you work with these two remarkable women. We have begun the process of seeking price quotes from many proprietary cookbook publishers and would welcome suggestions from our membership and friends, of whom some are old hands at publishing specialized materials. Email Barbara Fineberg at fineberg@bellsouth.net, if you have any ideas or caveats.
