Sängerchor and Damenchor attend big Sängerfest
                                by Eva Sadlier

Twenty-two members of our Deutsches Haus singing societies recently participated in the 57th National Sängerchor in Chicago. Our Sängerchor and Damenchor joined numerous singing societies from around the country for the triennial event held on Friday and Saturday, May 26 and 27.
For the Friday night Empfangskonzert at the Chicago Theater, in which several of the eight districts each presented a brief program, we participated with our own Southern District in singing a set of Seemanslieder. These were quite well received. For the Hauptkonzert of Saturday night at the University of Illinois Pavilion we participated with the massed choir of 1500 in an extensive program of mostly art and folk songs. It was an awe-inspiring and unforgettable event to have so many singers lifting their voices remembering Heimat. We owe our thanks to Sängerchor and Damenchor director Lyndall Roßbach, who also participated in the Fest, for preparing us for the gala event. It was with great pride that the
Damenchor participated in the flag ceremony which preceded the Saturday concert. Our new banner under the motto "Harmonie Hält uns zusammen" was carried by president Dr. Florence Jones and past president Gail Perry. At the installation of officers, also held on Saturday, Damenchor secretary Juanita Landau began another three-year term as archivist of Nordamerikanischen Sängerbund.
The numerous social events of the Fest included dances at the Intercontinental Hotel and a Friday night dinner by the Deutsches Haus members at the Restaurant Berghof. Our members enjoyed touring the beautiful and exciting city of Chicago and visiting some of its museum and galleries
Now we're looking forward to the next
ngerfest in the year 2004 in Peoria, Illinois.
