Important Membership Meeting September 19th at 8 PM

At the September Quarterly Membership Meeting on Friday the 19th at 8:00 PM, several proposed amendments to the Haus Charter of critical importance to the future of Deutsches Haus will be submitted to you, our members, for your approval.

To gain all the benefits of a charitable and benevolent entity under the Federal Law, it is mandatory that the Haus Charter be amended to conform to the stringent requirements of the revised Internal Revenue Code of 1986. The Deutsches Haus was incorporated as a Louisiana non-profit corporation on November 7th 1928 and its Charter has not been amended since that date. Three years ago, when Tom Shinn first ran for the presidency of Deutsches Haus, he did so with the stated purpose of updating the charter to enable the Haus to claim exemption from the annual filing and paying of income taxes on the revenues it derives from the Oktoberfest and other activities. With the assistance of Colonel Richard Kuntz, who has provided invaluable legal assistance by tirelessly researching applicable laws and writing the proposed amendments, this can now come to pass. The savings attained will be redirected into Haus projects and capital improvements. Additionally, all donations to the Haus in the future will provide the donor with a deduction on his/her individual income tax return, thereby reducing taxes paid by the donor. See Colonel Kuntz’s article on Page 2 for a description of additional Charter reforms.

You are urged to attend and to participate in this historic event. Voting for these Charter provisions will provide substantial financial benefit to the Haus and its membership and is an appropriate way to mark the celebration of our 75-year anniversary.  How better to ensure that our children and grandchildren will have the opportunity in future to celebrate another 75 years of a solvent active Haus?

As usual, food will be served after the meeting.

Amending Our Charter:
Why Support A-501 ( c ) ( 3 ) on September 19th?

Among the many benefits provided by 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) are some which do not technically fall under those explained previously. When the Haus was originally incorporated on the 7th November 1928, it was chartered for a period of 99 years. While at that time the Haus founders were comfortable with that time period, in the short span of the next 24 years, on 8th November 2027, our charter will terminate.

In anticipation of this event, another of the proposed amendments will revoke the original time limit of 99 years on the life of the Corporation and provide instead that the duration of the Corporation shall be PERPETUAL.

Influenced by the lean economic times when Deutsches Haus was incorporated some seventy-five years ago, its founders embedded in the Charter a prohibition that the Corporation “shall not hold property of the value exceeding One Million Dollars.” With normal inflation and the increase in property values, this restriction is not only archaic but unrealistic in today’s market. Consequently, this prohibition has been eliminated.

Finally, a major requirement of the Internal Revenue code is that ” No substantial part of the activities of the Corporation shall be the carrying on of propaganda or otherwise attempting to influence legislation and the Corporation shall not participate in any political campaign on behalf (or in opposition to) any candidate for public office” which language is now included.

The pre-order must be accompanied with a check or cash for the purchase. The price will revert to the regular price of $15 for each stein.

Annual German Heritage Festival Association Oktoberfest Parade

Come out to see or join in New Orleans’ only Oktoberfest Parade, sponsored by GHFA, on Sunday, October 5th, starting at 1 p.m. at Convention Center Blvd. and Julia, moving to Canal Street and into the French Quarter on Bourbon St. to St. Philip then to Decatur and back to Canal St., ending at the Deutsches Haus on South Galvez. The map of the parade route will be included in the Oktober Monatsblatt. The seventeenth Oktoberfest Parade Grand Marshall is five-star Chef and Proprietor of Broussard’s Restaurant, Gunter Karl Preuss and parade Princess and Prince are Heather Olivier and Stephen Dargis respectively, she an honor student and star tennis player at Archbishop Chapelle High School and he an athlete from Archbishop Rummel High School. A few openings remain for riders on the floats ($75.00) and we can always use more marchers ($50.00). Both amounts include a 1-year membership to GHFA. A religious service on the 2nd floor of Deutsches Haus led by Pastor Heinz R. Neumann of St. Matthaeus Unierte Kirche precedes the parade at 10:30 a.m. and is open to all.

And don’t forget the After-Parade-Party at Deutsches Haus with music by Haus favorite Rocky’s Hot Fox Trot Orchestra plus a German dinner and many types and brands of outstanding German beers. Admission is $20.00 per person and tickets are available from Keith Oldendorf and from the Deutsches Haus Steward.

GHFA Annual German Christmas (Eine Deutsches Weihnacht)

GHFA has made arrangements for the Annual German Christmas, Eine Deutsches Weihnacht, to be held at Broussard’s Restaurant 819 Rue Conti in the French Quarter on Sunday, December 14th at 6:30 PM. Anyone fortunate enough to attend the Goulasch Supper in August and to taste the superb meal provided by our Seventeenth Oktoberfest Parade Grand Marshall, five-star Chef and Proprietor of Broussard’s Restaurant, Gunter Karl Preuss, will be eager to attend. Starting with an open cocktail bar and hors d’oeuvres, the menu features multiple courses, including Trout Berliner and Beef-roll braised with dumpling, as well as salad, vegetable, two desserts, wine with the meal, and coffee. The cost is $75.00, which can be paid in 3 $25.00 installments. Contact Keith Oldendorf at GHFA meetings or call him at 504-482-6058. Checks may be left with the Haus Steward. Seating is limited.

We Need YOU!!

Please join the work party crew on September 13th at 9:00 a.m., the last chance we have to spruce up the Haus for the Oktoberfest celebration! There’s so much to be done. George LeSage will reward workers with a special meal later, in addition to the coffee and goodies provided by the Ladies’ Auxiliary as a morning wake-up as well as the hearty Poor Boy lunches they also donate. George is a fisherman and crabber par excellence and for those of us who have had the pleasure of enjoying his crab boils and fish fries that is quite an incentive. You’ll have a rollicking good time and you’ll learn a lot about how the Haus works. Volunteerism is the single most powerful driving force behind the success of the Haus and Oktoberfest. Wear comfortable old work clothes and help us repair, organize, and polish.

Introducing Stewart Eastman

Where do all the photos in Monatsblatt come from? At least ninety-five percent are the work of Stewart Eastman, an art major from New York City whose life took several unexpected turns after a stint in the Navy when he was assigned to keep track of practice bombing runs and to work with flight simulators, training devices and electronics, utilizing computers. A PC hobbyist and former computer game creator (“the pre-money era” he quips), he is a data base administrator, working at the Information Technology Center at U.N.O. and programming and tracking manpower, scheduling and personnel information for Civil Service and other contract customers. Stationed in New Orleans, he was discharged in 1991and, like so many transplanted New Orleanians, he never left.

A traditional jazz fan and Jazz Fest aficionado, he participates in a wide spectrum of ethnic and musical happenings and travels to and from most of them on his healthy non-polluting bike. He will always be found documenting every occasion with his omnipresent digital and 35 mm. cameras, whether it is the Chicken Dance at Oktoberfest (see his article in the next issue) or Greek dancing at the Greek Festival or the merrymaking activities of the Krewe de Vieux in the French Quarter with their member-constructed, mule drawn floats and traditional pre-Mardi Gras revelry. He attends almost every day of Jazz Fest and every concert of the Panorama Jazz Band.

He is not only an active member of Deutsches Haus, but an enthusiastic participant in the Crescent City Home Brew Club, the German Heritage Festival Association, Volksport, NOLHAM (New Orleans Living History Of The American Military Troupe) and Schlaraffia Nova Orleana. Recently, he gamely joined in the Cajun Dance instruction provided by the Ladies’ Auxiliary and he will be the official photographer of the Seventy-Fifth Anniversary Deutsches Haus Cookbook (in exchange for sampling privileges, of course). We are fortunate to have his support and enthusiastic presence at the Haus and look forward to many years of happy collaborations.

Best Wishes to Tom Czekanski

Annette Chioma  tells us that her husband, Tom Czekanski, a tireless and faithful volunteer, who had fell from a ladder, will be lying flat on his back for the next 3 months to heal 2 compression fractures in his back. Thankfully, there’s no permanent damage. We will miss his presence at work parties and at Oktoberfest and wish him a speedy recovery.

To Anna Whitely and Gail Perry

There are times when words are powerless to express the sadness and sorrow we feel when presented with a terrible and inexplicable tragedy. Our deepest sympathy to Anna and Gail who lost their great-grandson and grandson respectively last month and have inspired us with their strength and faith in the face of such heartbreak. We are blessed to have them both as in integral part of the Deutsches Haus community. We are here for them as they are always here for us.

Cajun Dancing with the Ladies’ Auxiliary

There’s no such thing as a dog day of summer at the Deutsches Haus. The August meeting of the Deutsches Haus Ladies’ Auxiliary featured Cajun Dance instruction by the Northshore Cajun Dancers from Abita Springs and our membership, both male and female, responded with much enjoyment of the process. The Bierstube resounded with the lilting sounds of Cajun music and the chuckles of the participants as they attempted the bouncy steps so characteristic of Cajun dancing. Despite occasional awkwardness and a few missteps, there was a discernible improvement in the aspiring dancers by the end of the too-brief lesson. Thanks to the patience and obvious enthusiasm of our instructors, Pete and Kathy Spadoni, Leroy and Marie Ursin, Pat and Estelle Baudur, and Bill Weissborn and Kateri Yager, the experience was a uniformly positive one with many requests for a return visit. As Trudy Burkhart, president of the Ladies Auxiliary, commented, “It’s impossible to be sad around Cajun music and dancing”.
