Oktoberfest 2002!

The Deutsches Haus celebrates another fine festival with the opening of Oktoberfest 2002 on Friday, September 27th. The German tunes of Prost! and Dixie Hofkappelle will be sure to have the crowd on their feet, dancing to such favorites as "Edelweiss," and "Lili Marlene," and the Chicken Dance will have young and old delighting in the musical mood.

The Oktoberfest Committee and food volunteers have prepared a delightful menu, including Sauerbraten (braised and marinated roast beef), Schweinebraten mit Champignon Sosse (braised pork loin with mushroom sauce), Rouladen (tenderized beef rolled with bacon, pickle, onions and mustard sauce), Kasseler Rippchen (smoked pork shank braised in a citrus sauce), Krautwickel (ground beef stuffing rolled in cabbage), three kinds of sausage, Kartoffelsalat (German potato salad), Kartoffelbrei (creamed potatoes), Bratkartoffeln mit Leberwurst (smothered potatoes with liverwurst), Sauerkraut, Rotkohl (red cabbage) and Gedünstetes Weißkraut (smothered cabbage) .

 

Tapping of the Ceremonial Keg October 4th

The Deutsches Haus will commemorate Oktoberfest 2002 on Friday, October 4th with the tapping of the ceremonial keg. Radio and television coverage of the event will provide excellent exposure of our festival to the community, so come out and be a part of the excitement!

HAUS KITCHEN READY FOR OKTOBERFEST

Have you noticed lately the big smiles on the face of President Tom Shinn and board member and Oktoberfest chair, Bill Gunn? Well, you don't have to look very hard to find the reason behind those broad smiles. The Haus board recently approved the purchase of a new six burner commercial stove including grill along with the installation of an access door at the read of the kitchen replacing a preexisting double hung window.

The rear door will greatly facilitate the delivery of food and other produce directly into the kitchen and the waiting hands of our skilled Haus chefs. With last year's purchase of a second large outdoor walk-in refrigerator/freezer now positioned next to the new kitchen door, our volunteers will certainly appreciate and enjoy the handy access and retrieval of food items.

Also bus boys and girls will no longer compete with our guests in the food serving lines where they formerly attempted to return soiled trays to the scullery for steam cleaning. Now the new access door will provide an unimpeded path for them directly into the rear of the kitchen thus avoiding the dining room and providing a further reduction of traffic in that area.

Sauerkraut, Sausage and Pretzels for Sale

Haus members are reminded that anyone interested in purchasing sauerkraut, wurst or pretzels (for cooking and consumption in their own homes) may do so by submitting their request to the Haus steward in writing along with the date the items are needed. A non-refundable deposit of 25% of the total order will be required when the order is placed. For more information, please see the Haus steward, Jim Copeland.

Schlaraffia

Here is another article in a series of occasional profiles on the many organizations, which make up the Deutsches Haus.

You wonder what the above name and picture means? It is the symbol of one of the oldest German fraternities in the world. Yes, in the world. This organization exists on every continent with the exception of Antarctica. And who knows, we may at one day be there too.

Let me tell you about it. Schlaraffia is the only German speaking organization in New Orleans and surroundings. Unfortunately, only men are allowed as members. That does not mean, however, that the other lovelier gender does not play an important role in it. They are the ones that chase their husbands, fiancées and lovers to their meetings ("Sippungen") during the winter months when Schlaraffia meets. And they also participate at special gatherings and festivities which all Schlaraffen love.

Schlaraffia is a close community of men who, with like-minded endeavors, strive to cultivate the art and sense of humor with the guidance of an established ceremony and whose main credo is the cherishment of friendship among each other. That really says it all, but I know you still have questions. Schlaraffia originated in Prague in 1859 from the disenchantment of artists and fine arts patrons with the established German theatrical community who was at its heyday in the 1850s. The 10th of October 1859 is recognized as the founding day of Schlaraffia with its credo: "Art, Humor & Friendship." Because of the aristocratic times when Schlaraffia was founded, its members are "Pages," "Squires" and "Knights." All administrative positions are either elected or appointed once a year.

One very important rule in Schlaraffia is: Religion and politics are never discussed during their meetings. This attitude permitted Schlaraffia to survive two world wars, even in this country. To become a member the only requirements are that you speak, read and write German, have at least one sponsor and successfully pass a trial period. It is designed to acquaint the prospective member with our proceedings and the membership whereas the "Reych" (local chapter) makes up its mind if the candidate would be a suitable member. A secret ballot at the end of the trial period will determine the acceptance of the candidate. We have a diverse membership, which accounts for a spirit of tolerance among us. Any like-minded individual (sometimes it takes a while for him to recognize his calling) is welcome and we encourage every German-speaking male to acquaint himself with our "Spiel" (game).

Oh yes, the owl is the symbol of wisdom.

As I will be out of town for an extended period beginning November 18 and returning December 30, if possible, I ask that 2003 membership dues be paid early. This will make it possible for me to povide the necessary information to the Nominating Committee for the 2003 election. Any questions in this matter can be referred to Brigitte Gunn at 394-5600.


NOTE FOR VOLUNTEERS

The Haus is discouraging walk-up volunteers (members, their friends and/or family members); scheduled volunteers may ask for assistance from time to time to compensate for an absent volunteer and/or a need for additional staffing due to other reasons beyond the normal. Any requests for additional volunteers during the festival will be coordinated with the Volunteer Staffing Chair Brigitte Gunn. New Display Cases !!

When you walk through the doors of Oktoberfest this year you will notice 3 new display cases. These were donated by Jason Bourgeois and installed by James Tregler. This makes our gift area really look like it belongs in the Haus.

President’s Message - Oktoberfest 2002

As our biggest festival of the year begins, we ask that the membership "encourage" their families and friends to come out and experience Oktoberfest 2002 at the Deutsches Haus. The Oktoberfest Committee, with our Oktoberfest Chair Bill Gunn, has met and worked diligently since March planning and shaping our Haus for this to be an efficient and cost-effective event. We have purchased and installed a number of new items, including a new door, dock and stairs in the kitchen to improve access through the back entrance, a new stove/oven with a griddle to improve efficiencies in preparing our food items, a new wine cooler, low boy freezer and low boy fridge behind the bar to open up the serving and bar space in the inside bar, display cases in order to better advertise and store our souvenirs, fans in the Heidelberg Hall to improve temperature conditions during functions and meetings, and a new Imbiss stand to improve serving and work space. So come down to the Haus and check out our improvements.

As always, Oktoberfest can only be as rewarding and successful for the Haus as the investment the membership makes in terms of volunteer hours. If you have the time and desire to volunteer, please contact the Oktoberfest Volunteer Chair, Brigitte Gunn (394-5600). We have volunteer opportunities for all ages and abilities.

Again, our menu items, beer, wine and schnapps have been carefully selected by the Oktoberfest Committee in order to provide a diverse and palate-pleasing collection of German delights. Check out the menus; for the first time, we have assembled a menu as tempting and delicious as you would experience in any restaurant. Menus will be posted in strategic places around the Haus, so our guests will have a good idea of what we have to offer before they enter the food line. Additionally, our beer & wine selections will be provided in menu form, being displayed on acrylic tents placed on our tables.

If you have never seen our kitchen in action (preparing our menu items for each festival weekend to feed up to 3000 people per weekend), you must come by and check out the operations on a Wednesday and/or Thursday evening or a Friday and/or Saturday at noon. I commend our Kitchen Captains (Ursula Jackson and the Gunns) who run a tight ship and have already begun the food prep (September 12) for this Oktoberfest. If you are interested in experiencing and learning how to prepare some of our dishes, please call Brigitte Gunn and let her know what time is best for you to volunteer.

Lastly, when attending your first night of Oktoberfest, note a change in our security plan and a slight change of scenery in the front of our Haus. Please observe NOPD blue patrolling on foot along Galvez and NOPD cruisers parked in the front of the Haus. With the support of Haus member Sgt. Lido Schaubhut, and the Captain of District #1, Capt. Arazio, we have obtained permission from the Chief of the NOPD to have NOPD District #1 provide security for our Oktoberfest. Our security plan is to have up to 4 officers providing security each night of Oktoberfest. Additionally, NOPD will henceforth following Oktoberfest provide security every Friday night and for all Haus events. This addition to our facility will provide a safer atmosphere and an added sense of security for our members and guests.

As you know, Oktoberfest is our utmost, primary fundraiser of the year and the income received provides for the operations and capital improvements of the Haus for the upcoming year. Therefore, I encourage all to come down and experience a little bit of Germany, Deutsches Haus style, during this Oktoberfest. Prost!

GHFA Oktoberfest Parade October 6th

The German Heritage Festival Association will take to the streets of New Orleans on Sunday, October 6 as it presents its 16th annual Oktoberfest parade. The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. from Convention Center Boulevard and winds through the Warehouse District, the French Quarter and downtown, ending at the Deutsches Haus at 200 S. Galvez Street.

Prince Eric Paul Coles and Princess Anne-Louise Sun Juttner will reign over this year’s festivities. Grand Marshal Gordon Nick Mueller, retired UNO professor and current director of the National D-Day Museum, will lead the 11-float procession. This year’s parade will feature a new prince and princess float, along with floats from the Deutsches Haus, the German-American Cultural Center, the German Heritage Cultural and Genealogical Society of Louisiana (the Gretna Germans) and others. The U.S. Marine Corps Band is scheduled to head the procession and coveted throws will include German-themed wooden nickels, medallion beads, pretzels and mini beer mugs.

Pastor Heinz Neuman will conduct German church services upstairs at the Deutsches Haus before the parade at 10:30 a.m.

The post-parade party will be held at the Haus beginning at 3 p.m. By popular demand, Rocky’s Hot Fox Trot Orchestra will make a return appearance and German food and drinks will be served. Tickets for the party are $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and under and are available IN ADVANCE ONLY from the Haus steward. Tickets will NOT be sold the day of the parade or at the door. Electrician 2nd Class Andrew Schaubert ( Schaubhut ), the father of Deutsches Haus active member Andrew Paul Schaubhut, Jr., was honorably discharged from the United States Navy on September 11, 1920. Andrew "served on board the United States Ship Von Steuben on transport duty with the Cruiser And Transport Forces during the war against Germany and Austria." He made eighteen trips through the Submarine Zone between the dates of June 9th, 1917 and November 11th, 1918." (Transcript of Record, War Service, U.S. Navy)
