Vom Historiker des Hauses

Our Past Presidents

Thousands shortly will descend upon the Deutsches Haus and many of them know but a single word of German, OKTOBERFEST. The famed celebration had a modest beginning in 1810 when Maximilian I, King of Bavaria, threw a party for his subjects to honor the marriage of his son, Crown Prince Ludwig, to Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen. This event now attracts crowds exceeding seven million people annually.

Growing increasingly in popularity, our local Oktoberfest began over forty-five-years ago from a single evening for revelers and expanded to ten nights, starting the last week in September and including the first four weekends in October. In March, 1996, the Haus doubled the size of its Bier Garden and added an Imbisstube (snack bar) and tented area to accommodate and improve the comfort and convenience of the throngs of guests.

Today Oktoberfest merrymaking is the cornerstone of a city-wide celebration at the Haus, where German descendents offer the best in authentic bratwursts, knackwursts, and Weisswurst, krauts and rotkohl, and other delicious hearty traditional dishes, as well as an outstanding selection of imported beers and wines and, of course, Gemütlichkeit.

Norris & Maria Babin Send Their Thanks

We are happy to report that Norris Babin is doing well after his recent illness and was able to come with Maria to a recent Friday night social. Both Norris and Maria want to convey their thanks to their friends at Deutsches Haus, whose outpouring of support and affection was both overwhelming and touching and an inspiration to both of them.

Crescent City HomeBrewers

Our convivial friends of the Crescent City HomeBrewers have asked the editor to remind you that if you suffer symptoms of depression and withdrawal after the fun of Oktoberfest has ended please remember their annual Winterfest 2004 on Saturday, November 13th at the Haus between 6 and 11 PM. Of course, it features the best of home brew and commercial beer, wine, food and music galore, all for $30.00 which includes everything. Best of all, you can sit back and enjoy it without lifting a finger. Watch your E-mail for a reminder. Need more information? Contact Richard Cuccia at richardcuccia@hotmail.com or Monk Dauenhauer at 504-689-8386 or monknmil@aol.com.

Damenchor and Sängerchor Notes

Deutsches Haus Damenchor and Sängerchor members rehearse on the first and third Fridays of each month, except during Oktoberfest. Both specialize in the singing of German lieder, which fosters and preserves our German cultural traditions. Conductor Lyndall Rossbach of Damenchor was formerly a teacher of music in the New Orleans Public Schools and has conducted the Louisiana symphony in performance with the St. Louis Cathedral Choir. The Sängerchor was instrumental in the founding and establishment of Deutsches Haus from its inception 76-years ago and Damenchor is now celebrating its 21st year.
Together, the Damenchor and Sängerchor are planning a special program for the opening of the 2004 Oktoberfest. On Friday, September 24th, the Gemischter Chor (the combined chorus) will present a rousing march and the United States and German national anthems under the direction of Lyndell Rossbach accompanied by Gini Allen’s Prost Band.
Both the Damenchor and the Sängerchor welcome new members who love music and singing and the discipline and camaraderie of participating in our activities both within the Haus and in the community. Membership in Deutsches Haus is not required to participate.

The Deutsches Haus Auxiliary

Members of the Deutsches Haus Auxiliary invite all members associated with Deutsches Haus to attend their monthly meetings at Deutsches Haus on the second Friday of every month (except during Oktoberfest and the month of July) at 8:00 p.m. The primary purpose of the Auxiliary is to support Haus activities, and, of course, to enjoy each other along the way. In September, we had our annual Wine and Cheese Party to honor Haus officers, the Damenchor and the Sängerchor, and our own membership. We offer a variety of programs of folk dancing and singing open to all members of the Haus. The Auxiliary also co-sponsors the annual Haus family Christmas and Easter parties. It has been our pleasure to donate many necessary items to the Haus, particularly to help upgrade the kitchen for Oktoberfest and other activities. This year we have accrued a total of five male members, which has helped to broaden our horizons and added humor and a new point of view to our proceedings.
Bake sales during Oktoberfest are our major source of funds. The volume of cake sales during Oktoberfest weekends is overwhelming and we need the support not only of Auxiliary members, but of all members of Deutsches Haus. Whether you bake or buy, we need your help to offer a delicious selection of cakes to our guests the 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th weekends. Bring your culinary masterpieces to the Haus on Fridays and Saturdays during Oktoberfest and enable us to continue our support for the Haus. Volunteers are also needed to sell cakes.

For more information call Trudy Burkhart at 943-1588.

German Heritage Festival Association Oktoberfest Parade

The annual GHFA Oktoberfest Parade takes place on Sunday, October 3, 2004 led by Grand Marshall Stephanie Riegel of WWL-TV, Prince Nicholas Clark, a 2004 graduate of UNO and recipient of a scholarship to the University of Innsbruck, and Princess Stacy Dicrispino, who is on the President’s list at William Carey Nursing School where she is studying to be a nurse anesthetist.

Deutsches Haus will open at 10 AM, followed by Sunday services led by Pastor Neumann of the German Seaman’s Mission at 10:30 AM on the 2nd floor of the Haus. At 11:45 AM the 1st bus leaves the Haus for Convention Center Blvd. & Julia, where the floats have assembled. The final bus leaves the Haus at 12:15 PM. There is a $1.00 fee for the bus ride. From arrival at the assembly point to 1:00 PM, when the Parade begins, the parade will be formed. Between 3 and 3:30 PM the Parade ends at Deutsches Haus and the After Parade Party begins.

No one will be allowed into the Haus without an After Parade Party ticket. Please bring your ticket with you to avoid embarrassment. As of Friday, October 1st , tickets are available from the Haus Steward at $20.00 each, which covers dinner, beer, and music by Rocky’s Hot Fox Trot Orchestra, a real crowd pleaser.  A cash bar will be provided. At 3:30, food service begins and the ceremonial keg will be tapped. Refreshments will be served in the Bier Garden at the Haus. After the introduction of the Grand Marshall, Prince and Princess between 4:30 and 5:00 PM, the party will continue until 7:00 PM. Interesting new parade throws, such as unique and attractive beer stein throws, which normally would have been sold at the September meeting, will be available until the end of the month by contacting Keith Oldendorf at 462-6058.

Why Weren’t You With Us at the Dresden Exhibit in Jackson MS?

You missed a grand time, a comfortable ride on a roomy bus, good food, great stories, and a relaxed and thorough tour through the fascinating art objects, pottery, china, armor and jewels that made up a truly remarkable exhibit, awesome in its abundance and beauty.  We hope that you went on your own to see it, because it is a part of our heritage we had the opportunity to see without embarking upon a trans-Atlantic flight to Dresden.

Crescent City Volkssport Club

The Crescent City Volkssport Club is holding a 10 K sanctioned walk in connection with the Oktoberfest Parade. Interested walkers will meet on Sunday, October 3rd, at 11:30 AM at the Deutsches Haus. At exactly 12 pm, they will walk together down Canal Street to the end, turn

Christy Bein and Shane Lasalle are Engaged!

Happy news! Our friend and member Christy Bein and Shane Lasalle are engaged. Shane proposed on Christy’s birthday, after putting the engagement ring on a hook hanging from their dog’s collar. Luckily the pup wasn’t hungry. When you see Christy at a Friday Night Social, ask her to show you her beautiful ring which has a lovely story behind it. Congratulations to two very sweet and fun-loving kids to whom we wish a lifetime of happiness with each other!

Our Special Thanks to Special People

Thank you to Brigitte Gunn, Margaret Ingram, and our very special volunteers for making the Usingers Cold Cut Night a tremendous success. Hopefully, this will be the beginning of many Friday night adventures throughout the year. Thank you  Joe “Kentuck” Stephanie, Jr. for a truly delicious & remarkable BBQ that was obviously a labor of love—and the work of an excellent executive chef. Thank you Anne Farmer for the hours spent on the German Film Nights and decorating the donated new cake stand in the Bier Garden.
