Oktoberfest 2002

Oktoberfest      2
Hurricanes     0

Final Score

And you thought that the Saints had a good record! Isidore and Lili threatened, but the German spirit of fun and festivity prevailed and all five weekends of Oktoberfest 2002 took place, proving that there wasn't a hurricane or tropical storm that could drown out this party. The final figures weren't available at publication time, but the crowds have been large and enthusiastic for this year's festival. Repeat visitors and first-time festers spent their October weekends eating, singing, dancing, toasting and enjoying our Deutsches Haus brand of hospitality. Special thanks again go out to all of the volunteers that spent countless hours making Oktoberfest a success!

GHFA Oktoberfest Parade Recap

April Robinson

The morning began at the Deutsches Haus with German church services conducted by Pastor Heinz Neuman. After that, neither the threat of inclement weather, road construction on Canal Street, nor a Saints home game could deter the spirits of this year's Oktoberfest parade participants.

With the U.S. Marine Corps Band in the lead, followed by Grand Marshal Gordon Nick Mueller and this year's royalty, Prince Eric Paul Coles and Princess Anne-Louise Sun Juttner, the 16th annual parade rolled through the streets of the Warehouse District, the French Quarter and downtown on Sunday, October 6th. Floats representing the German Heritage Festival Association, the Deutsches Haus, the German-American Cultural Center, the German Heritage Cultural and Genealogical Society of Louisiana and others threw stuffed animals, German-themed wooden nickels, prized medallion beads and Bavarian blue and white specialty beads to the crowds of locals and tourists.

The parade rolled with a surprise or two (a couple of "no-show" bands and marching units), but GHFA president Keith Oldendorf believed "overall everything went really well." Storm clouds threatened, but the rain held off until the end of the route when Oldendorf said "it was a welcome relief for a warm day."

The after-party at the Deutsches Haus boasted record attendance numbers, welcome food and drink and the swinging sounds of Rocky's Hot Fox Trot Orchestra. Grand Marshal Mueller and Oldendorf tapped the ceremonial keg, celebrating yet another successful parade run.

AN ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE MEMBERSHIP CHAIR

As I will be out of town for an extended period beginning November 18 and returning December 30, if possible, I ask that 2003 membership dues be paid early. This will make it possible for me to provide the necessary information to the Nominating Committee for the 2003 election. Any questions in this matter can be referred to Brigitte Gunn at 394-5600.

Margaret Fest

November 8, 2002

On Friday, November 8, 2002, Haus members, guests and friends will gather to support Margaret Ingram as she recovers from heart bypass surgery. Margaret is a retired New Orleans Public Schools teacher and long-time member of the Haus who had surgery this summer and is facing extremely costly medical expenses. If you have enjoyed the desserts prepared by our Ladies Auxiliary, participated in the Haus’ annual Easter and Christmas parties, or benefited from the many services and fixtures provided for the Haus by the Ladies’ Auxiliary, you have been the recipient of Margaret’s kindness and hard work. Please come out and celebrate her life and give her a hand during this time of need.

Margaret Fest, set for 7:00 p.m., will feature a dinner of red beans and rice with salad, a raffle of door prizes and a grand prize, and live music by Ira Milan’s band. The grand prize is a 19" Sylvania television generously donated by Ray and Madelyn Garrity. Admission is free, and participants are asked to pay a nominal fee for the meal. Tickets are on sale for the door prizes and grand prize. If you are unable to attend but would like to make a contribution, donations will be gratefully accepted in advance and after the event. For more information, please call Virginia Riedl at (504) 834-8322.
