Deutsches Haus 75th AnniversaryA 75th Anniversary Message to Our Membership from Deutsches Haus President, Lt. Col. Thomas G. Shinn, USMC (Ret) The Deutsches Haus is now 75 years old. The passing of time since the organization of the Deutsches Haus has exacted many changes. The membership no longer consists entirely of persons of German birth, extraction or language. Nevertheless, the Haus and its members strive to maintain a German atmosphere and to foster German traditions and culture through participation in Oktoberfest, Volksfest, Tirolnacht, children’s Christmas and Easter Parties, Fourth Friday Socials and accordion nights, Quarterly Membership Meetings, German language classes, German music and choral groups, providing an umbrella for other German-related organizations and interests, and inaugurating Haus special events. The ambiance and atmosphere of the Haus bestow a sense of old-country comradeship amongst its members and guests. On November 7, we will be celebrating a milestone, 75 years of representing German tradition, origins and influence in the New Orleans area. Each member is invited to attend and bring their spouse or “significant other” whether or not they are members. Together we will commemorate 75 years of an organization of hard-working members who have tirelessly maintained the Deutsches Haus so that their children and all future members could continue to enjoy not only the physical premises but the tradition of inclusion and fellowship it represents. The Haus’ greatest asset is its membership. And it is our volunteers who keep Deutsches Haus standing and operating for the benefit of our membership and community. The proceeds we receive from Oktoberfest are vital to the successful existence of the Haus, since these funds pay for Haus operations until our next Oktoberfest. And Oktoberfest is only as successful as the dedication and participation of our members. On this, our 75th anniversary, I thank and congratulate previous and current members for their volunteerism and dedication to the Deutsches Haus, and I challenge the current membership to continue to follow the path laid out by our predecessors in innovative ways, remaining true to our mission but adapting to the demands of changing times, a process vital to our continued success as we approach our centennial anniversary.

Vom Historiker des Hauses Members of the Deutsches Haus are celebrating the year 2003 with enthusiasm and pride in the recognition that on 7 November this year the Haus will have been the standard bearer of the German community in the New Orleans area for the past seventy-five years. Our original meeting was an impressive occasion with the presentation of the gavel by Chairman Joseph Reuther to Sigmund Odenheimer, president of the Deutsches Haus, who was introduced to the assemblage as one of the most prominent citizens of New Orleans. The importance of the role played by citizens of German ancestry in the development of New Orleans was addressed by Mayor Michael O’Keefe, representing city government. He emphasized that the roots of German-American influence went deep into the history of the city. The Deutsche Gesellschaft, the German Society, an incorporator of the Deutsches Haus, was in its eighty-second year and the Turnverein (Turners Society) had been in existence for eighty-one years. The Harugari Singing Society, the third incorporator, also had a long history prior to our inception. From the time the doors opened at 2 o’clock until the conclusion of the program at midnight, the Deutsches Haus, established to be the home of the consolidated German societies of New Orleans, was thronged with members and guests. The evening program included the male chorus under the direction of Professor Joseph Engel presenting crowd-pleasing selections from Saenger Gruss and Tannhauser and including Deutschland Ueber Alles.
