MargaretFest a Great Success

by Madelyn Garrity

The fundraiser held to help defray open-heart, surgical expenses for Margaret Ingram - Deutsches Haus Board Member, Deutsches Haus Member and Ladies Auxiliary Officer - was held Friday, November 8, 2002 and was a wonderful success. The event was organized by Virginia Riedl, Patricia Heinemann and Janice Daughdrill and took place at the Deutsches Haus. Festive music was provided by Ira Milan and his band. Melodious tones were heard from the Saengerchor and Damenchor while plates of red beans, rice and salad prepared by Ursula Jackson, Pat Heinemann and Madelyn Garrity, respectively, were consumed by the crowd.

Many thanks to all of our prize and cash donors for the raffle, as well as the silent auction. Thanks, also, to the Ladies Auxiliary for baking their cakes and donating their time to sell the goodies. And, final thanks go to the many individuals who volunteered their time and energy the night of the event to work for this worthy cause.

Monatsblatt Notice:

The Monatsblatt editorial staff is looking ahead to the next year with some important changes to come. Beginning with January's issue, the Monatsblatt will be published bi-monthly instead of monthly. This should allow us to provide you a richer variety of articles, news items and photos, along with a two-month calendar for planning ahead. Changes and updates will be reflected on the Deutsches Haus Website (www.deutscheshaus.org) and through our weekly "e-bulletins." If you would like to receive it, please e-mail us at  deutscheshaus@cox.net.

The Monatsblatt staff is especially excited about celebrating the Haus’ upcoming 75th anniversary in November 2003 and we’re planning special coverage of the events, including a look back at our history. Happy holidays to everyone and we look forward to bringing you more "news of the Haus" next year.

Vom Historiker des Hauses

Our 75th Anniversary Celebration

Everyone likes a birthday party, especially the celebrant, and next year each of you is most cordially invited to a gala event. Beginning January 2003, the Deutsches Haus Board of Directors will schedule not just one but a series of events to celebrate the history and 75th birthday of the Germany Community Center in New Orleans in honor of November 7, 1928.

Every true birthday party needs decorations to lend joy and excitement in creating a wonderful festive affair, which necessarily involves each of you as guest of honor. Your presence is not only expected but your participation is required. For the Haus to retell all party goers of its rich and colorful history, it will select from its own extensive archives cherished memorabilia of its past for display.

However, you are invited to present your personal involvement of those family members in Haus activities through times past with photographs, letters, programs of such events as Volkfest, Saengerfest, visits of distinguished guest or visits of our maritime city by vessels of the homeland. Without delay, search your family albums, attics, closets, secret hiding places or saved newspaper articles for use in displaying our pride in our common heritage.

Our Thanks to all

To the President, Board of Directors, and Deutsches Haus Members:

We wish to thank all of you for the wonderful support and cooperation given to the MargaretFest Committee during our recent project.

We wish to thank the President and Members of the Board for allowing us to use the Deutsches Haus for the Fest and for their fine corporation in helping plan the project. We also wish to thank the Haus Steward for helping set up the Haus and the Heidelberg Hall for our many guest.

To those who donated so many prizes, we offer our sincerest thanks. To Ira Milan and the Polka Band for their wonderful polka music that always keeps everyone dancing, and to the Saengerchor and Damenchor for lending their voices to help entertain our guests, it was wonderful having all of you.

So, again, we wish to thank all of the Members who participated in the Fest. All of this, again, proves the reasons why the Deutsches Haus was founded, which was to help our fellow Germans. Margaret is a long-standing member of the Deutsches Haus, as well as the Ladies' Auxiliary. She needed our help and the Deutsches Haus responded.

We thank you again for all of your help!

In Memoriam

Professor Alfred F. Goessl
1920-2002
by Ray Garrity

On September 28, 2002, Professor Alfred F. Goessl, an Honorary Life Member of the Deutsches Haus, died at his home after a long bout with cancer. Professor Goessl was born in the German-speaking section of Czechoslovakia (Bohemia). At the close of World War II, the entire German population of Czechoslovakia was expelled from the country, and Professor Goessl relocated to Munich. In 1951, he immigrated to New Orleans, where his brother served as brewmaster at the Jackson Brewing Company. Shortly thereafter, he was appointed instructor of German at Loyola University. While at Loyola, Professor Goessl was often heard to say "You cannot learn German sitting in a classroom. You must sing, you must drink, you must enjoy yourself with the language. Then you will learn it!" In keeping with this belief, he reorganized the Loyola Deutscher Verein (German Club), which in turn sponsored regular "Bier Abend" gatherings at Deutsches Haus. On these occasions Professor Goessl provided his students with song sheets containing the words for the most popular German folk, drinking, and student songs. He would lead his students in these songs, and thanks to his vivaciousness, even those who knew no German at all were soon happily singing along. As a result, many of his students developed a love for Deutsches Haus. Today, probably one fourth of the entire Haus membership (including at least three past presidents) can be traced either directly or indirectly to Professor Goessl’s influence.

In 1963, Professor Goessl left New Orleans to accept a teaching position in Kansas. After serving at two different universities in that state, in 1969 he and his wife, Professor Ingeborg Goessl, joined the faculty at the University of Missouri in St. Louis where he served as head of the German Department until his retirement in 1985. Even after his departure from New Orleans, however, he maintained regular contact with his former students. On two occasions he and his wife visited New Orleans, and his former students gathered with him at a standing-room-only "Goesslfest" at the Haus. Despite his absence from New Orleans, Deutsches Haus continued to have a special place in his heart. Approximately eighteen months ago this affection was demonstrated when he made a very large, unsolicited donation to the club.

With Professor Goessl’s passing, Deutsches Haus has lost a good friend and benefactor. But while he may be gone, he will certainly not be forgotten. His friends and former students are working with the Board of Directors to assure that a suitable memorial to this man, who did so much for our club, will be placed in a prominent position in the Haus.
