Maximillian
(Max) John
Our Friend and Colleague, June 20, 1925 – July 22, 2005
Beloved husband of the late Louise John, Max was a native of Bremerhaven,
Germany, and enlisted in the German navy at age 18, serving as a boatswain
on a
U-boat in WW II, until it sank off the coast of Nova Scotia and he was
captured
by the British in 1944.
After the war, he applied for and was granted American citizenship and
joined
the US Navy, serving proudly and with distinction in the Korean conflict,
Vietnam and Desert Storm. He is survived by his son Paul Coffman, step-
daughters Barbara and Carol and 2 grandchildren.
A long-time active member of the Haus and resident of mid-city, Max was
widely
admired as an accomplished dancer and never missed a good party if he
could
possibly help it. As many members vividly remember, Max was an
enthusiastic
accordion player, undeterred by complaints from his shipmates during the
Korean
War that he played the same songs over and over again, resulting in their
tossing his accordion overboard. He then tossed them overboard.
Max reminisced with his friends about his happy early school years,
speaking
with great fondness of his schoolmates and teachers. He was a loving &
supportive husband to his wife Louise throughout her long illness and
often
mentioned that he considered himself to have been the most fortunate of
men to
have had her as a wife.
Funeral arrangements have not been finalized and will be posted here as
soon as
the details are available.
Max, we are going to miss you and will follow your advice, “ Im Himmel
gibt’s
kein, Beer drum trinken wir es hier!”
